Vero Beach High School Orchestra

Text Box: More Information

Information

Members of the Vero Beach High School Orchestras include beginning players through advanced musicians.  String orchestra curriculum is taught during each class period, and a full symphony orchestra meets weekly, after school.  The orchestras have been consistently rated ‘superior’ by the Florida Orchestra Association, and perform regularly throughout the school year.  In addition, many students in the orchestra perform in small, chamber ensembles and as soloists.

The Vero Beach High School Orchestra program includes the freshmen orchestra, concert orchestra, philharmonic orchestra, and symphony orchestra.  Interested students must audition for placement into the philharmonic and symphony orchestras, since they are very advanced ensembles.  This year, students will study literature by Bach, Beethoven, Grieg, Handel, Mozart, Rossini, Tchaikovsky, and many others.

Matt Stott has directed the VBHS orchestras for ten years.  He also teaches orchestra at Gifford Middle School, and he formerly taught at Oslo Middle School, where he was ‘teacher of the year’ in 2006.  A graduate of Baylor University, he was named ‘alumni music educator of the year’ in 2010.  Matt is a violinist and continues to perform regularly.  His violin teachers were Patti Austin, Susan Starrett, and Bruce Berg.  He studied conducting with Stephen Heyde and Michael Haithcock.  Mr. Stott is a member of the American String Teachers Association, the Florida Music Educators Association, and the Florida Orchestra Association, with whom he is a certified adjudicator.  An avid athlete, Matt enjoys playing basketball and tennis whenever time allows.  He and his wife, Katie, are parents to a one-year old daughter.
