DEFINITIONS OF PLAYING EXAM RUBRIC POINTS

 

Right Hand Position: 

1- 2         Student does not demonstrate correct placement of fingers or functional bow hold

3-4          Student demonstrates correct finger placement, but not all aspects are correct

5              Student demonstrates consistent finger placement and functional bow hold

 

Left Hand Position:

            1-2          Left hand and arm are completely incorrect

                3-4          Left arm is in correct position but wrist/hand do not address instrument correctly

5              Left arm is fully functional

 

Posture:

            1-2          Posture is not lengthened or balanced

                3-4          Posture is lengthened and balanced, but instrument is not held correctly

                5-7          Posture and instrument position are consistently correct and functional

 

Intonation:

                1-2          Intonation is consistently incorrect

                3-4          Student has general sense of intonation but is inconsistent in finger placement

                5              Finger placement is consistent and basic intonation is accurate

 

Rhythm:

                1-2          Student does not keep a steady beat

                3-4          Student keeps a steady beat but does not display a sense of meter

                5              Student keeps a steady beat AND displays a sense of meter

 

 Accuracy of Notes:

1-2          Multiple errors are present; student unable to play notes correctly; may indicate lack of preparation or material that is too difficult

                3-4          Student performs with control, although some errors are present

                5              Student performs with complete mastery of notes; no errors

 

Bowings:

                1-2          Bowing and articulation markings are not followed

                3-4          Student plays with correct bowings

                5              Student plays with correct bowings and articulations
