Matt Stott, Director

Matt Stott is the orchestra director at Vero Beach High School and Gifford Middle School.  Entering his ninth year as orchestra director at Vero Beach High School, he also directed the program at Oslo Middle School, where he was ‘teacher of the year for 2006,’ and he started the orchestras at Gifford Middle School.  He has also been in demand throughout the state as a clinician and adjudicator.  He is a member of the American String Teachers’ Association, the Florida Orchestra Association, the Florida Music Educators’ Association, and the Music Educator’s National Conference.

A native of Yorkville, IL, Mr. Stott came to Vero Beach from Baylor University with a degree in Music Education.  His primary conducting professors were Stephen Heyde and Michael Haithcock.  As a violinist at Baylor, he performed in the Baylor Symphony and Baylor Chamber Orchestras, where he acted as concertmaster, and he was also a member of the Waco Symphony Orchestra.  He has performed as a soloist and with orchestras in Illinois, Texas, and Florida.  Highlights include solo performances of the violin concertos of Tchaikovsky and Sibelius.  His violin teachers were Patti Austin, Susan Starrett, and Dr. Bruce Berg.

An avid athlete, Mr. Stott has also been an assistant basketball coach at Vero Beach High School, and he enjoys playing basketball and tennis whenever time allows.  He also enjoys running and hiking with his wife, Katie, a teacher at Citrus Elementary; they are expecting their first child in September of 2009.
