The Vero Beach High School Orchestra consists of students in grades 10-12 on Vero Beach High School’s Main Campus, along with 9th grade students from the Freshmen Learning Center. The vision of the Vero Beach High School Orchestra is “To inspire students, school, family, and the community while striving to reach our personal and collective potentials through the music we prepare, perfect, and perform.” The orchestra has seen a growth from eleven string players in 2001, to over one hundred twenty string players in 2009. There are three orchestras at Vero Beach High School: The Concert Orchestra, the Philharmonic, and the Symphony Orchestra. The Vero Beach High School Symphony Orchestra consists of the Philharmonic joined by members of the Vero Beach High School Band, who together, perform masterpieces of the orchestra repertoire. The VBHS Orchestras have received ‘Straight Superior’ ratings by the Florida Orchestra Association at both District and State Assessments, several members have been ’All-State’ musicians, and numerous alumni have advanced to study and perform at universities and conservatories. While the orchestra has travelled to Chicago and Washington, D.C. in recent years, their focus is to provide various performances throughout the year for the residents of Vero Beach and Indian River County. In the past few years, performances have included works by Barber (Adagio for Strings), Beethoven (Coriolan and Egmont Overtures, Symphony No. 3 and Symphony No. 5), Copland (“Hoe-Down,” from Rodeo), Dvorak (“New World” Symphony), Grieg (Holberg and Peer Gynt Suites), Liszt (Les Preludes), Mozart (Magic Flute Overture and Symphony No. 29), Mussorgsky (Night on Bald Mountain), Rimsky-Korsakov (Capriccio Espagnol and Russian Easter Overture), Tchaikovsky (Romeo & Juliet Fantasy Overture, ‘Finale’ to Swan Lake, Serenade for Strings, and Symphony No. 4), Vaughn-Williams (Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis), Verdi (La Forza del Destino Overture), and Vivaldi (The Four Seasons), among many others Students in the Vero Beach High School Orchestra work to master technique and musicianship through practice, rehearsal, performance and service, all the while absorbing the history and theory of the music studied.
